The extrinsic proteins of Photosystem II

Resumo

Nesta revisão, examinamos a estrutura e função das proteínas extrínsecas do Fotossistema II. Essas proteínas incluem PsbO, presente em todos os organismos oxigênicos, as proteínas PsbP e PsbQ, que são encontradas em plantas superiores e algas eucarióticas, e as proteínas PsbU, PsbV, CyanoQ e CyanoP, que são encontradas nas cianobactérias. Essas proteínas servem para otimizar a evolução do oxigênio em concentrações fisiológicas de cálcio e cloreto. Elas também protegem o cluster Mn4CaO5 de redutores exógenos. Numerosos estudos bioquímicos, genéticos e estruturais têm sido usados para investigar a estrutura e função dessas proteínas dentro do fotossistema. Discutiremos os papéis funcionais mais recentes propostos para esses componentes, suas estruturas (como deduzido de estudos bioquímicos e de cristalografia de raios X) e as localizações de seus domínios de ligação propostos dentro do complexo do Fotossistema II. Abstract

In this review we examine the structure and function of the extrinsic proteins of Photosystem II. These proteins include PsbO, present in all oxygenic organisms, the PsbP and PsbQ proteins, which are found in higher plants and eukaryotic algae, and the PsbU, PsbV, CyanoQ, and CyanoP proteins, which are found in the cyanobacteria. These proteins serve to optimize oxygen evolution at physiological calcium and chloride concentrations. They also shield the Mn4CaO5 cluster from exogenous reductants. Numerous biochemical, genetic and structural studies have been used to probe the structure and function of these proteins within the photosystem. We will discuss the most recent proposed functional roles for these components, their structures (as deduced from biochemical and X-ray crystallographic studies) and the locations of their proposed binding domains within the Photosystem II complex.
