Biological Activity of Vegetal Extracts Containing Phenols on Plant Metabolism

Resumo

A influência de extratos vegetais derivados de uva vermelha, frutas de mirtilo e espinheiro
folhas sobre o crescimento da planta Zea mays L. e a atividade da fenilalanina amônia-liase (PAL), uma chave
enzima da via fenilpropanóide, foi investigada em experimentos de laboratório. os extratos
foram caracterizados usando espectroscopias FT-IR e Raman, a fim de obter um padrão dos principais
grupos funcionais. Além disso, o teor de fenóis foi determinado por HPLC, enquanto o teor
dos hormônios ácido indolacético e isopenteniladenosina foi determinado pelo teste ELISA e o
atividades semelhantes a auxina e giberelina por bioensaios de plantas. O milho tratado revelou maior
e biomassa foliar, teor de clorofila e açúcares em relação às plantas não tratadas. espinheiro, vermelho
casca de uva e mirtilo a 1,0 mL/L induziu altos valores de conteúdo p-cumárico, enquanto espinheiro
também apresentaram altas quantidades de ácidos gálico e p-hidroxibenzóico. Atividade PAL induzida por espinheiro
a 1,0 mL/L teve os valores mais altos (11,1 vezes UNT) e foi forte e linearmente relacionado com o
soma de fenóis foliares. Nossos resultados sugerem que esses extratos vegetais contêm mais de um grupo de
substâncias promotoras de plantas.



Abstract

The influence of vegetal extracts derived from red grape, blueberry fruits and hawthorn
leaves on Zea mays L. plant growth and the activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), a key
enzyme of the phenylpropanoid pathway, was investigated in laboratory experiments. The extracts
were characterized using FT-IR and Raman spectroscopies in order to obtain a pattern of the main
functional groups. In addition, phenols content was determined by HPLC, whereas the content
of indoleacetic acid and isopentenyladenosine hormones was determined by ELISA test and the
auxin and gibberellin-like activities by plant-bioassays. The treated maize revealed increased root
and leaf biomass, chlorophyll and sugars content with respect to untreated plants. Hawthorn, red
grape skin and blueberry at 1.0 mL/L induced high p-coumaric content values, whilst hawthorn
also showed high amounts of gallic and p-hydroxybenzoic acids. PAL activity induced by hawthorn
at 1.0 mL/L had the highest values (11.1-fold UNT) and was strongly and linearly related with the
sum of leaf phenols. Our results suggest that these vegetal extracts contain more than one group of
plant-promoting substances.
