O magnésio é abundante em todas as células e essencial para a vida, mas suas funções gerais na célula são pouco compreendidas por uma variedade de razões. A seguir, revisaremos algumas das propriedades químicas do Mg2+ que o tornam virtualmente único entre os cátions biologicamente relevantes. As revisões restantes nesta edição especial de Biometals cobrirão aspectos individuais das funções do Mg2+ nas células.

Abstract

Magnesium is abundant within all cells and essential for life, but its general roles in cellular function are poorly understood for a variety of reasons. Below we will review some of the chemical properties of Mg2+ that make it virtually unique among biologically relevant cations. The remaining reviews in this special issue of Biometals will cover individual aspects of Mg2+ functions in cells.
